AutoCAD was originally developed in 1981 at the MIT CAD laboratory of IRI Graphics for its CAD operator. In 1982, as IRI Graphics filed for bankruptcy, the company was purchased by Gartner, a vendor of professional CAD software. Gartner launched AutoCAD with version 1.0 in December 1982. The Gartner version was released only for the Intel 8080 processor, although the Gartner version ran on the Zilog Z80, 68000, 6809 and ARM processors. IRI Graphics’ version of AutoCAD was available for the 8086.

There was a brief period during the 1980s where it became the only CAD program available for the Macintosh platform.
