The part I’m struggling with is how to pass the variable to the command. The script is being run from a cronjob.

Use $USER from the shell script to get the user, then just use that as part of the command. For example, if you want to use wget you can then do:

# Get current user (wget expects their user to be in $USER)
user=$(whoami)
wget $user\@$user\:$user\:$1\:$2
This assumes that the shell script is set up to run the command with the username and password substitued into $user\@$user\:$user\:$1\:$2.
