6.18Â In the present scenario of changing climate, threats to human
populations from natural disasters, and accelerating rates of urbanization, there is a
growing need for the advanced understanding of climate and weather forecasting. In
the present day, the climate change has become a critical public health concern around
the world (Zanotelli, n´d; Leppard, 2006). In Indonesia, climatic variability
influences crop and pasture production, drinking water, sea level rise, and recurrent
droughts (Grassano et al., 2011). Another critical concern in Indonesia is landscape
degradation and urbanization—which poses even higher risks than in other
countries (Brunet et al., 2009). A recent report (Pulungan et al., 2011) showed that
the agriculture sector accounts for over 40 percent of the total national GDP, almost
twice as much as the service sector, and that the agriculture sector employs nearly half
the labor force in Indonesia.
Assessing the risk posed to the agriculture sector is essential to solving the climate
change problems in Indonesia. The following paragraphs show that Indonesia is among
the countries with most total agro-ecological region (AEs) coverage, but also among
those that have the least coverage of relatively non-agricultural AEs.
There is growing concern about the high levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions
from Indonesian agriculture, due to its importance to the country as a source of food and
sustainable livelihoods for Indonesian people
