The digital CAD revolution occurred in the 1970s and 1980s when companies began to transition to a digital environment where instead of drawing on sheets of paper or cardboard, a sketch was made on a computer screen using an electronic “mouse”. CAD software was the foundation of digital design and drafting.
The first widely used commercial CAD system was developed by Computer Drafting Systems Inc (CDS) in 1976, and sold to the United States Air Force for use in the planning of construction and operations of new missile sites. In 1981, the company moved into the manufacturing market with its “CADUS” software, which was initially used on the Data General Nova minicomputer. It was the first successful application of the electron microscope to such a market. Since then, it has been widely adopted, and is used by the majority of industries today.
Since then, CAD has become ubiquitous in the design and manufacturing process. Other CAD programs include AutoCAD Architecture (for designing building), AutoCAD Electrical (for electrical and plumbing design), AutoCAD Mechanical (for mechanical design), AutoCAD R14 (for the architectural and engineering industry), AutoCAD eDrawings (for the architectural and engineering industry), AutoCAD Web (for web design), and AutoCAD 360 Design (for the architectural and engineering industry).
In late 2005, Autodesk released a version of AutoCAD Architecture that runs on the Web. It was named Autodesk 360 Design, and has since become a highly popular application in the architectural and engineering industry.
Released in 1982, AutoCAD is today a standalone desktop application for computer-equipped users, and mobile and web apps for internet-capable devices (e.g., iPhone, Android).
Versions of AutoCAD are available for Microsoft Windows and macOS, and for iPad, Android, and iOS.
Overview
AutoCAD is marketed as a simple, yet powerful drawing and design program. The most common users of AutoCAD are engineers, draftsman, contractors, and architects, and the application is widely used in the automotive, construction, and engineering industries. The application has been used for over thirty years and is supported by the Autodesk Community with frequent upgrades and new releases.
AutoCAD covers the complete process of creating a 2D or 3D drawing.
History
The AutoCAD system and software dates back to 1982 and was originally developed by Computer Drafting Systems Inc (CDS

In the 1920s, Mark Twain wrote a book about his adventures with the “Log of the Elsinore Storm”, a ship’s log in the form of a novel. The format was based on E. E. Schattschneider’s 1890 revision of the British Admiralty logbook, an eighteen-page format with 100 lines of text per page. Later generations of the format are referred to as “Mark Twain”. The two most popular versions are the twenty-page Mark Twain original, a common logbook format found in most merchant ships; and the seventy-page Mark Twain print edition, the format Twain used in many of his published works.
Many early 20th-century authors wrote “autobiographical novels” that had no fictional setting but which took a specific point of view and provided the experience of the novel from that point of view. An example of this is the famous book In Our Time by G. K. Chesterton in 1912.
In English, books have always been written to order, as though they were documents rather than literary artefacts. One of the first, surviving example is a book of parchment (made from sheep’s skin) found in a barge on the Thames. It has been dated to 1514. The practice has continued, and much of the information required for a book order is now given on websites for booksellers and libraries. Most books are now printed, rather than hand written. This has greatly simplified the process of production, and made it easier for buyers to find and order books.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, the size of books was increasing very rapidly. Even relatively short books were often written in several editions. In the early 17th century Samuel Johnson wrote his dictionary (first published in 1755), “Nobody but a blockhead ever wrote except for money.” By the mid-19th century, a small book was beginning to be referred to as a pamphlet, and in the early 20th century a large book was beginning to be called a folio. In the 1970s, in order to reflect the trend towards the elimination of the post office from the distribution of books, the word book came to be applied to large format books, up to around A5 size.

Download the latest Autodesk SDK. I use version 2.50.
Open the SDK. Select “Windows -> Preferences -> Current Application.”
On the “SDK Installed” field, select the “Autodesk SDK (2.5)” checkbox.
The first time you run the auto cad, you will be asked to download the Autodesk SDK. You need to activate the SDK before you can install AutoCAD 2010.
Install Autodesk AutoCAD and activate it.
Before installing the release version, you have to install the SDK.
Open the SDK. Select “Windows -> Preferences -> Current Application.”
On the “SDK Installed” field, select the “Autodesk SDK (2.5)” checkbox.
We have to activate the SDK before we can install the release version of AutoCAD 2010.
Install Autodesk AutoCAD and activate it.
Extract the file autocad.exe to any directory on your computer.
Now type “autocad” in the run dialog.
Click on the “file” menu at the top of the application window and then select “open”.
Navigate to the directory where you extracted the file.
Click on “autocad.exe” and select “open”.
You will now see the screen “[AUTOCAD] Open”. Click “OK”.
You will now see a message box that says “[AUTOCAD] Files – Read Only”. Click “OK”.
You will now see the screen “[AUTOCAD] Open”.
You are now logged in to the demo version of Autodesk AutoCAD 2010.
Here are a few tips to get you started:
If you are working with an existing drawing, select the drawing on the left side. If you are designing a new drawing, click on the “New” tab.
Autodesk AutoCAD has four menu options: Help, Options, Find, and Preferences. Click on any of these menu options to see what you can do with AutoCAD.
You can save your drawings. Click on the file tab. The default location is “My Computer
Skeletonize:
Turn a wireframe into a skeleton with freehand-directed precision. Move and edit the skeleton, and snap to the drawing’s planes and arcs with no additional steps. (video: 1:40 min.)
Teaming:
Separate your tasks and use your team’s work to help reach your goals. After teaming, users can work on their own, share their work, and collaborate on designs using CAD and annotation tools. (video: 1:20 min.)
Sketch Interactions:
Make your work more intuitive by showing the correct context with the right tool. Instead of always showing the active sketch tool in the tool palette, show the active tool by either context (similar to the Properties palette) or directly by the icon on the canvas. (video: 1:35 min.)

What’s new in AutoCAD 2023
AutoCAD’s legacy of getting users to start drawing without questions, questions without drawing, and in-place editing is alive and well. For many, it may be the easy way to get into AutoCAD, but what AutoCAD 2023 brings to the drawing table will make you want to jump right in. Here’s what’s new in AutoCAD 2023.
Markup Assist
What is Markup Assist?
Markup Assist is a new tool that allows users to import and incorporate feedback from printed paper or PDFs into their designs. Markup Assist takes feedback from the user, parses it, and then incorporates it into the drawing. This gives users the power to automatically incorporate feedback into their designs, without additional drawing steps.
For example, say a user wants to create a sign for a store. They can go to their favorite browser and find a photo of a store sign that is designed with a sketch tool. They can then print it out, cut and paste it into a drawing, and incorporate the layout into their own design. This saves time, and it is more efficient than simply re-creating the sign.
The user is no longer required to first create a new drawing, and then design the text and symbols on the drawing before adding it to the drawing
