History
AutoCAD was originally developed and marketed by Autodesk in the mid-1980s. Shortly after it was introduced, AutoCAD began receiving praise from CAD operators in the field for its innovative user interface, comprehensive commands and powerful features. During the early 1980s, the need for CAD software was growing, as the industry began using CAD to design mechanical equipment. According to AutoCAD’s product documentation, about 11 percent of all technical drawings were created in AutoCAD at the time the software was introduced.
The first version of AutoCAD, released in December 1982, was a desktop application running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. Before AutoCAD was introduced, most commercial CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal.
The first version of AutoCAD, the first release of AutoCAD 1.0, did not include a workbench and does not have a wireframe feature. Instead, the most popular drawing programs used then were the Rodent or PickPocket™ series of drawing programs from PickPocket Software, Inc. in Melbourne, Florida.
Following the introduction of AutoCAD, Autodesk began to create other CAD software, including AutoCAD Architecture, AutoCAD Mechanical and AutoCAD Electrical. Autodesk also began selling AutoCAD-related training and consulting services to companies that were designing large buildings.
As AutoCAD 1.0 was introduced, the drawing software market was still in its infancy. Today, CAD software continues to evolve with new products such as Civil 3D and Revit.
AutoCAD Today
In 2019, AutoCAD is available as an installed desktop application, as a stand-alone mobile app and as a web-based app. According to Autodesk, over 1.5 million licenses for AutoCAD are currently in use worldwide.
In 2011, AutoCAD was the sixth most-downloaded desktop app of all time on the Apple App Store and was downloaded more than 100,000 times in the month of April.
Software features
AutoCAD is a 2D vector-graphics-based computer-aided design (CAD) application.
According to Autodesk, AutoCAD software is available in three types of versions:
a stand-alone desktop application;
a mobile app; and
a web
database connections to Autodesk Architectural Desktop and others
AutoCAD data interchange allows users to create highly integrated drawings or CAD files that can be sent, stored, or exchanged between 3D CAD programs.
Peripherals
AutoCAD supports use of one or more input devices and allows users to manipulate the output of the design in 3D using a workbench.
Interactive training
AutoCAD is supported by two separate products: Autodesk Navisworks and Autodesk AutoCAD. Autodesk Navisworks is designed for both professional and academic navigation design. AutoCAD is a full-featured 3D CAD program designed for architecture, engineering and construction. It offers a unified user interface and functions across the range of applications designed for the Architectural design process.

What is an Autocad.cad file?
CAD stands for Computer Aided Drafting. A CAD file is a template for drawing/design.
Before they are saved, CAD files are referred to as “drafts” or “dags.”
You can open a.cad file in Autodesk AutoCAD or you can open a.dwg file in AutoCAD.
Creating the Template
Start AutoCAD and click the New button.
Click File > Open.
Select the type of file you would like to open.
Press the OK button.
Creating the Design
Start AutoCAD and click the New button.
Click File > Open.
Select the type of file you would like to open.
Press the OK button.
Modifying the Template
Start AutoCAD and click the New button.
Click File > Open.
Select the type of file you would like to open.
Press the OK button.
Add, edit, or remove blocks from drawings, as well as draw and measure circles, polygons, and arcs, with the built-in Arc Tool. Add parameters, text, and symbols directly to objects and bevel them to smoothly and easily achieve any shape and style. (video: 1:54 min.)
See marks that are in two or more layers, such as underlines, strike-throughs, filled-and-unfilled text, and other symbols, in a single view. (video: 1:49 min.)
You can now create and edit text and annotations for all types of annotations, including text from the Type Tool, text from AutoCAD Text Builder, and text from other drawing applications. (video: 1:25 min.)
